Spotlight on ITIL Expert Certification

April 13, 2015

ITIL is the most widely adopted approach to IT service management in the world and has been adopted globally by thousands of organisations, professionals and consultants to help them deliver improvements to IT services. ITIL helps promote cost reductions in service delivery, enhancements in processes, improved measurement and reporting as well as continually driving up the quality of IT Services and provides direct benefits to service providers, businesses and their customers.
The ITIL Scheme works on a point system. Each course upto Expert Level contained within the ITIL umbrella will award the student with a number of credits.
There are 4 levels of certification within the scheme:

  1. Foundation
  2. Intermediate
  3. Expert
  4. Master

The starting point has to be the Foundation level. This level will provide an overview of ITIL and introduces the key terminology, structure, concepts and processes. The Foundation Course is worth 2 ITIL credits
Once the Foundation has been achieved, students can continue onto Intermediate study. At this level there are 3 options for the courses that are taken. Students can chose to achieve their credits through the Lifecycle Track, the Capability Track or by a mixture of the two.
Intermediate Lifecycle courses are aimed towards delegates who will implement and manage ITIL processes.  They take a management perspective of an individual lifecycle phase. Courses from this track award the student with 3 ITIL credits.
Intermediate Capability Courses are aimed towards delegates who will be executing ITIL processes on a day to day basis. Courses from the Capability track award the student with 4 ITIL credits each.
If students have a specific requirement or interest in specific areas within the ITIL scheme, they can focus their attentions by mixing the courses from the Lifecycle and the Capability tracks. It is recommended that students should aim to achieve a balanced selection of modules (covering processes and functions across the entire ITIL Service Lifecycle) when working towards ITIL Expert Level of qualification, to ensure that the full ITIL knowledge base has been covered.
The third stage in the qualification scheme is a capstone course – Managing Across the Lifecycle. This can only be taken once 17 credits have been achieved – 2 from the Foundation course and 15 from Intermediate study.
MALC provides the final 5 credits needed to obtain the 22 needed for Expert status.
After achieving Expert status, delegates can work towards the ITIL Master qualification.
ITIL Master involves preparing a detailed overview of your work in service management across the service lifecycle. This will be reviewed by a panel of industry experts, who will invite you to an interview to discuss your overview.  There is no training to support the ITIL Master scheme as it is based on experience.
You can read more about all the ITIL qualifications at the official site (
There are many organisations who provide ITIL training. Students should check that the provider is fully accredited. This can be done with a simple check at
Whether the training organisation delivers their training online, in the classroom, by virtual instructor or by blended learning, they MUST be accredited for the certificates awarded at Intermediate level and beyond to have any value. Foundation study is slightly different, as self study will suffice and no course completion certificates are required to present for the exam; but if purchasing training materials, make sure that they are from an accredited company as this is the guarantee that they are up to date and correct!
