Job Market Insight: Why ITSM Qualifications?

ITSM certifications and qualifications still have an impact on career and salary prospects and IT is still a growing industry.

Computerworld’s Salary Survey showed an average of 3,6% increase in IT specialists’ overall compensations for 2015 from the previous year, and the 2015 analysis by HR and recruitment experts Hays concur that senior-level technology professionals are in high demand.

According to Hays’ report, there is 18% skill shortage in Operations and 11% in Management, so project work and consulting roles should remain abundant in 2016/7. Management Consulting firm Janco Associates makes a similar prediction claiming that the IT Job Market will grow approximately by 78,200 jobs in 2016.  Further data from Upp Technology show that the unemployment rate among IT specialists in the US is less than half the average for the country.

“Workers have a lot of power at the bargaining table,” says Jason Hayman, Market Research Manager and staffing expert at TEKsystems. “They can pick and choose the opportunities they want to take, and they can set their demands for employers.

Looking back at Computerworld’s research, we can only agree. Of the more than 4 800 IT employees responding to the poll, only 9% said they're actively looking for a new position at a different employer. This leaves real potential for people who want to move into the ITSM sector.

A survey of 2268 managers showed that almost half of them expect to increase IT staffing in the near future. 36% claimed that during the past couple of years it had taken between three and six months to fill open IT positions. For 15% of the managers polled, finding the right person took more than six months.

According to this same survey, 64% of managers expecting to expand their IT staff with the creation of highly skilled specialist positions, while 31% want staff or entry-level technical professionals.

There's a lot of data that shows that certification and formal training is a requirement for many positions. Yes, you'll need experience and a proven record, but you can demonstrate that you have the knowledge, by formalising it with certification training. Start building your ITSM certifications and knowledge to ensure that you have as many opportunities open to you as possible.

Gaining certification can be a long process; it can be hard to find the time or money for study; however, the information that we've found indicates that it will be worth it!
