ITIL Update - Thinking About the Future

March 2, 2018

AXELOS recently announced that there will be updates made to the ITIL framework in 2018.

Peter Hepworth, CEO of AXELOS says, “ITIL is a community-driven initiative, and I would now like to encourage IT professionals to join our Global Research Programme. This is their opportunity to contribute to and drive forward this latest evolution of the framework. They will take ITIL best practice into the future by ensuring that it continues to provide service management professionals with guidance that reflects the realities and demands of today’s rapidly evolving business environment.”

There are still lots of details that are not known, however AXELOS has confirmed that the core elements of ITIL will remain, but will be updated to include practical guidance on adopting ITIL with other, newer practices, such as DevOps, Lean and Agile.

Updates and changes are inevitable, and with the last update to ITIL happening in 2011, it's been a long seven years that have seen many changes in the way that organisations work. Digital transformation, the increasing levels of automation and AI have forever altered the way that services are delivered and managed. The plan is to ensure that the new update ensures that ITIL will help organisations be even more responsive, transparent and agile.

The other piece of good news, is the confirmation that ITIL 2018 will recognize the certifications currently held. Updates to the training syllabus for each of the current ITIL courses are pretty inevitable, but these will usually be some time after the updates to the framework. As with all previous changes to ITIL (and other best practice methodologies) there will be a crossover time period, so that candidates for exams can certify using the version that they have studied. We'll provide more information as and when it's available.

The upshot is, ITIL is and will remain relevant, it's evolving and changing as times change. So becoming ITIL certified is as relevant now than it ever has been. For more information on our ITIL Course, please visit or contact us with your enquiry.
