It’s official! AXELOS have announced that the new ITIL 4 Foundation exam will be available from February 28th, 2019.
Here’s our latest update on ITIL 4.
What’s in ITIL 4?
This eagerly awaited update builds on the content in ITIL v3, bringing ITIL into the digital age and including more practical guidance to help organizations tailor an IT management strategy that will help them to adapt to the increasingly complex modern service environment.
The ITIL 4 authors have shared some information with us about the content of ITIL 4, although we’re still not able to share full details publicly. They have said that ITIL 4 is an evolution of ITIL v3; existing service management fundamentals haven’t completely changed, but the context and the environment have.
ITIL 4 has more focus on concepts like value, outcomes, costs and risks, as well as a very strong focus on continual service improvement. Some of the core ideas from existing ITIL versions like incident management, change management, and problem management still exist in ITIL 4, but ITIL 4 gives a much more holistic view.
Lead architect Stuart Rance explained in a recent blog:
Incident management, for example, is not just a process. We have to take into account:
Building on ITIL Practitioner
The ITIL Practitioner publication and associated certification were published by AXELOS in 2015. The publication and course are built around 9 guiding principles. These principles are:
We now know that the ITIL Practitioner course will not form part of the ITIL 4 certification scheme, but we are told that the guiding principles will have a role in the ITIL 4 publications, helping organizations to transform their culture and ways of working to build more effective service management capabilities.
What’s happening and when?
The ITIL Foundation Guidance has been released to training organizations in a draft form so that we can prepare course materials to help our candidates on their ITIL education journeys. It will be released to the public in quarter 1, 2019, and the Foundation exam will be available on February 28th.
The publications and exams to support the higher level ITIL v4 certification modules will be released in the second half of 2019.
