How can you benefit from both PRINCE2 and PMP?

In the world of Project Management PRINCE2 and PMP are often thought of as two qualifications which are not necessarily compatible, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality PRINCE2 and PMP are complimentary approaches that help create well rounded project managers who know both what to do and how to do it.

What is PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 stands for PRrojects IN Controlled ENvironments. PRINCE2 is a method with an integrated set of processes and themes covering the whole project lifecycle and all project management roles. PRINCE2 makes reference to techniques, for example when Gantt charts might be useful, but it doesn’t tell you how to draw one. It is more to do with the theory behind project management, rather than its implementation.

AXELOS own the intellectual property relating to PRINCE 2, and it has foundation, practitioner and professional levels of qualification.

What is PMP?

PMP on the other hand is a set of best practices designed to be able to tackle each topic area in isolation. It is only targeted at Project Managers, and describes techniques such as how to schedule and create Gantt charts. It is based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) that covers the broad spectrum of project management competencies.

PMP is owned by the Project Management Institute (PMI), and they offer several specifications but do not split them into expertise levels.

How can they sit together?

Quite easily, actually! PRINCE2 and PMP are offering different things to different people, but together they create a powerful blend of foundation knowledge and practical knowhow that will allow you to manage projects effectively and further your career.

PRINCE2’s approach is to learn, get qualified and then practice, whereas PMP is a more experience based experience – almost like becoming chartered. That’s not to say that even if you have been managing projects for years that you can’t learn something from PRINCE2. With the different levels of expertise available there is always room for experience PM’s to learn, and it’s easy to see how both qualifications could sit side by side. After all, hundreds of thousands of qualified PM’s can’t be wrong!
