How is the course structured?

There are 6 modules within the course, and these are broken down into individual lessons so that you can manage your learning at your own pace and to suit your lifestyle. Here is a quick overview:

• The principles of cloud computing, this includes the concept, evolution and architectures, drivers and limitations
• Implementing and managing cloud computing, including the building of a local cloud environment and the principles of managing cloud services
• Using the cloud, including access and support for business processes
• Security and compliance, including the risks, how they can be mitigated and managing identity and privacy in the cloud
• The business case for cloud computing including costs and benefits and evaluation of implementations

The course also contains current articles, case studies and examples to bring your eLearning experience to life with quick fire quizzes to test and recap your knowledge of learning outcomes.

What are the key learning points?

By the end of the course and upon successful completion of the EXIN Cloud Computing exam you should be able to:

• Explain what cloud computing is and compare the main deployment and service models
• Know the evolution toward cloud computing by describing the main concepts that lead to the development of the cloud such as the role of the internet, network and servers, virtualization and managed services
• Understand the cloud computing architectures including the Service Oriented Architecture and the difference between a single purpose and multipurpose architecture
• Know and identify the drivers and limitations of cloud computing
• Understand the building of local cloud environment including the main components and their interconnection, the use of secured access to a Local Area Network, the risks of connecting to the internet and the principles of managing cloud services
• Describe the use of IT Service Management principles (ISO/IEC 20000) and the management of service levels in a cloud environment
• Know how users can access the cloud and understand how cloud computing can be used for business processes including the role of standard applications in collaboration
• Understand how service providers can use the cloud and identify benefits and risks of providing cloud-based services
• Explain security and compliance in cloud computing including the security risks, mitigating measures, identity management, privacy, compliance issues and safeguards
• Understand the business case for cloud computing and describe the evaluation of performance factors, management requirements, satisfaction factors, service providers and their services

What will I find interesting?

There are lots of topics to mention in terms of what might grab your attention. It also depends on your personal interests, your organizational culture and the aspects of the Cloud Computing Foundation that will be most relevant to your career development. If you are very new to the cloud then Module 1 will give you a good overview of the characteristics, deployment and service models; there’s also a timeline covering the evolution of the cloud to give you some perspective, and an introduction to the concepts of multitenancy, virtualization and service oriented architecture.

If you come from an ITSM background, then you may find how service levels are managed in a cloud environment interesting. Often the main concern with the cloud surrounds security and compliance and Module 4 explores this area in detail including GDPR legislation and regulation across the globe. If you are unsure of what to look for when choosing a cloud service provider, then you will find the evaluation of cloud computing very useful. There are lots of relevant case studies and real-world examples included that are bound to spark your interest and may lead to further study. What might I find most challenging?

The Cloud Computing Foundation course introduces cloud concepts from both a business and technical perspective. You may find web access architecture, standard protocols and OSI layers challenging, or you may find compliance trickier. Regardless of the level of your previous experience the course aims to support you fully to achieve certification in a variety of ways including internal course links that provide additional information on a process, principle or technique. You have the option to access more information and links to external sources whilst studying.

The exam expects you not only to absorb the information taught on the course but really engage with it and apply it, and so the whilst the course provides lots of current and relevant examples, you should carry out your own research and further study on any areas you are unsure of. Take advantage of the additional resources available such as the study guides, case studies, exercises, solutions and sample paper to ensure that you are fully prepared for the exam.
