The Story Behind the Training for ISO 20000
Behind every course registration there is a person with a life. This is Brian’s story.
I work for the public sector, in a role that demands regular international travel. My story begins with a project requiring me to be in Saudi Arabia for 8 months. Everyone who travels for a living knows that it is less than ideal to be separated from your family and home. In addition to my normal responsibilities this trip also coincided with the last possible time for me to complete ISO/IEC 20000 training. Professional development seems to be one of those things I’m committed to but can’t always make a priority. However, in this instance I had no choice as my employer had adopted the ISO/IEC 20000 standard and was insisting that I had to take the Foundation course.
ISO/IEC 20000 was an ideal course for me to take; I already hold my ITIL Foundation and have studied a couple of the intermediate modules and I knew that this course would give me a refresher on some of the ITIL principles and would give me a further qualification that I hope to use to enhance my career. With the recent arrival of my fist baby, I wanted to do all that I could to improve my chances of promotion and hopefully increase my salary!
Most of the team that I work with hold an ITIL Foundation certificate, although the department has been somewhat slow to adopt and mold some of the best practices presented in the Foundation course. I hoped that by taking the ISO training it would help me to guide them towards making improvements to some of our IT practices.
The main challenges that I had in achieving this qualification were that I was on a very tight project schedule, I was working away from home and I was worried about finding a training provider who would deliver the course in English, whilst I was abroad ITSM Zone solved the problem for me! The online course was ideal – I only needed an internet connection. I was able to study on an evening whilst in my hotel room (perhaps this was easier than trying to study with a young baby in attendance anyway!) and I took the exam in the same hotel room when I had completed the course. I felt like I had all the support that I needed; the tutor was really good and responded quickly to a question that I had. Being alone to sit the exam seemed a little strange at first, but the web proctor gave me clear instructions and I actually felt quite relaxed as I started the first questions. I’m pleased to say that I passed first time!
